Towards a Research University: Undiknas Holds a Book Review on Breakthroughs in Data Analysis
Denpasar – Strategies for writing scientific papers have become a topic of discussion among students preparing their proposals and theses. To assist students in writing scientific papers, Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (Undiknas) once again held a Book Review and Workshop with the theme “Breakthroughs in Data Analysis and Scientific Publication” in a hybrid format at the Dwi Tunggal Auditorium Undiknas Denpasar and via Zoom meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
The Book Review and Workshop was officially opened by the Rector of Undiknas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Nyoman Sri Subawa, S.T., S.Sos., M.M., IPM., ASEAN. Eng., commonly known as Prof. Shribawa. He expressed his gratitude to ISEI, noting that this event aligns with the tagline of Undiknas University: “I extend my gratitude to ISEI for organizing the Book Review ‘Quantitative Methods with RStudio: Applications for Management & Business Research’ at our campus, Undiknas University, which is certainly an important part of the learning process and deeper understanding, especially in research, as we also have the tagline ‘Techno Research-preneur University,” said Prof. Shribawa.
The event was attended by experts from various national and international universities, including the Rector of Perbanas Institute & Professor of Economics at IPB, Prof. Dr. Hermanto Siregar, M.Ec., Deputy Chairperson of Division III of the ISEI Central Board & Member of the LAMEMBA Executive Council, Prof. Dr. Christantius Dwiatmadja, S.E., M.E., Education & Cultural Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur & Professor of Economics at IPB, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Firdaus, S.P., M.Si., Advisor to the Bank Indonesia Representative Office in Bali, Butet Linda H. Panjaitan, Professor of FEB Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ayu Ketut Giantari, M.Si., and ISEI Executive Secretary, Firman S Parningotan, M.Ec., along with Undiknas students.
The Book Review and Workshop was divided into two sessions. The first session began with a book review moderated by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Undiknas, Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Raka Suardana, M.M., who gave the first opportunity to Prof. Dr. Hermanto Siregar, M.Ec., to provide an introduction. The second opportunity was given to Prof. Muhammad Firdaus, S.P., M.Si. Prof. Firdaus highlighted that students often use paid applications for data processing and analysis, sometimes resorting to cracks. In his books, “Econometric Model Applications with RStudio” and “Quantitative Methods with RStudio,” Prof. Firdaus offers RStudio, an open-source (free) application easily accessible to students online. Additionally, Prof. Firdaus cautioned about publishing scientific work in reputable international journals: “When looking for reputable international journals, pay attention to the field of study, subject area, and the journal’s editors. Many journals have economics as a subject area, yet none of the editors have expertise in economics,” said Prof. Firdaus.
The third reviewer, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ayu Ketut Giantari, M.Si., stated that this book is excellent as a pocket reference for lecturers and students. The final reviewer, Gede Crisna Wijaya, S.E., M.Si., noted that Prof. Firdaus’s book is highly recommended for beginners because it is easy to understand, can be used across multiple disciplines, and is accompanied by many tutorial videos on YouTube. During the book review, Crisna Wijaya suggested adding multi-disciplinary research case studies to Prof. Firdaus’s book.
The second session featured a workshop on tips for writing scientific articles and methods for data processing and analysis using RStudio. This session was led by Gede Crisna Wijaya, S.E., M.Si., and presented by Prof. Muhammad Firdaus, S.P., M.Si., and attended by Undiknas lecturers and lecturers from several universities in Bali. At the end of the event, Prof. Dr. Christantius Dwiatmadja, S.E., M.E., expressed his appreciation for the event, hoping that such activities would be held continuously to help lecturers and students process data and publish their work in reputable international journals.
This event aligns with two crucial pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Pillar 4: Quality Education and Pillar 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. By enhancing the capacity of students and lecturers in data analysis and scientific publication, this event contributes to improving the quality of education through research-based learning. Additionally, by promoting the use of technology and innovation like RStudio, the event supports the development of knowledge-based industries and advanced educational infrastructure. The skills gained from this workshop enable students and lecturers to conduct more in-depth and data-driven research, which in turn supports sustainable innovation and industrial development.
