Undiknas Students Organize “Back To Roots #8” Environmental Awareness Campaign in Gianyar
Gianyar – Students from Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (Undiknas), who are members of the Communication Science Student Association (HIMAPRODI Ilmu Komunikasi), once again held a community service activity titled “Back To Roots #8”. This two-day social initiative, which took place on November 15-16, 2024, carried the theme “ROOT: Recycling Our Own Trash”, aiming to raise public awareness about the importance of proper waste management.
The event was held in Sukawati District, Gianyar, featuring a series of educational programs involving elementary and middle school students, as well as local communities. Through creative and interactive approaches, HIMAPRODI Ilmu Komunikasi Undiknas hopes to foster collective awareness about reducing waste, recycling, and improving waste management practices.
Engaging Students Through Fun & Educational Activities
The event began with learning sessions at SD Negeri 3 Celuk and SMP Negeri 1 Sukawati, where Undiknas students educated young learners on responsible and creative ways to manage waste both at school and home. The students were introduced to different types of waste, the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) concept, and participated in hands-on activities to turn waste into useful items.
Beyond lectures, the students engaged in discussions and educational games designed to instill early environmental awareness. By incorporating fun and interactive learning, it is hoped that they will develop sustainable habits in their daily lives.
Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Future
Apart from school-based education, the event also featured awareness sessions with guest speakers from various environmental sectors. Representatives from “Malu Dong” Community, an organization actively advocating environmental issues, provided insight into reducing plastic waste and adopting eco-friendly lifestyles.
Additionally, lecturers from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Undiknas delivered a presentation on effective waste management methods and the detrimental impact of environmental pollution. These sessions aimed to equip the community with concrete steps to manage waste efficiently and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.
Building a Culture of Environmental Responsibility
The core principle of “Back To Roots #8” is to instill a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness. In today’s modern world, waste management has become a crucial issue that requires collective efforts. HIMAPRODI Ilmu Komunikasi Undiknas is committed to fostering public awareness about waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable waste management solutions.
Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The “Back To Roots #8” initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities,
- Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
By promoting education and waste management campaigns, this program encourages eco-friendly lifestyles, reduces plastic waste, and increases community participation in responsible waste management.
With initiatives like these, public awareness of environmental sustainability will continue to grow, proving that small actions taken today can spark significant change for a greener and healthier future.
